5 Ways to Stay Healthy During Summer

Posted on 23rd July 2021

Summer. Long sunny days, vacation by the seaside, cold drinks – what can be better, right? Barely anything, we know. But no matter the weather, we have to prioritise our health and well-being. So, how do you achieve this during summer months when pretty much all you want to do is sip on that smoothie and lie in the shade? Good question. Sometimes the hardest part is to actually start doing… something. Absolutely anything. But don’t you worry, we’ve have gathered a short list of ways you can stay healthy without too much effort. Want to find out how? Keep on reading!

Don’t underestimate the power of hydration

Seriously, don’t. Get a drinkware of your choice, a glass, or your favourite mug and fill it up to the brim with some water. If you don’t like it plain, that’s not an issue – just add some lemon, or any fruit of your choice and enjoy that refreshing drink. Hydration is so important all around the year, not just when it’s so hot that you can barely even move due to those crazy temperatures. Trust us, you don’t want to end up dehydrated and devoid of energy. That’s no fun. Instead, make sure you drink plenty of liquids to replenish your body and stay healthy. It’s that easy – all you need is water.

Make sleep your best friend

We are not joking – sleep is probably one of the most crucial things on this list. Think about it, when you’re tired, you need some time to rejuvenate, so you choose to sit down in front of the TV and perhaps watch your favourite TV show or a movie. It is known as unwinding but not actually resting. You’re still actively paying attention to whatever is happening on the screen and neither your body or your mind get enough rest. What you need to do, is put your gadgets away, leave your phone downstairs, and get those eight hours of sleep doctors keep talking about. This way, when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, you will wake up with a fresh mind and most importantly, well-rested. And if you struggle to fall asleep in the evening, we recommend grabbing a book instead of browsing on social media. By doing so, you will limit your exposure to the blue light that our phones emit, and your circadian rhythm will stay intact.

Meditate to relax

We all have heard about the benefits of meditation but are we willing to try it for ourselves? It’s not a secret that we all get stressed and anxious from time to time and summer is not an exception. So, why not to introduce something as helpful as meditation? Frankly speaking, most of our problems are in our heads – there is rarely no solution to a situation we might have found ourselves in. But it is how we react and what we do next that matters most. If you find yourself stressing over something that, perhaps, should not affect you as much as it does, try mindfulness and meditation. There are various techniques and exercises you can follow that will truly help you to calm down and unwind. Of course, nobody is suggesting you do this for an hour, even the pros would probably struggle with that, but try introducing at least five or ten minutes of mindfulness into your daily routine. We are sure, you will feel the difference!

Stay active

We know, we know, nobody wants to hear this but we are going to say it anyway – you need to stay active and productive. If you are anything like most of the population, you will plan a vacation during which all you are going to do is relax in the sun. And while it does sound fun, on the third day you will probably feel miserable and bored, which is not what we want in the slightest. We are not telling you go run a marathon, we are simply suggesting finding an activity you enjoy – is it hiking? Cycling? Swimming? Even walking will do! Try to stay busy and organised, develop a routine that you will follow. It doesn’t have to be anything major, you don’t want to overwhelm yourself during your holiday. Set out a small goal for yourself every single day and try to achieve it. This way, you won’t get bored too easily and you will have something to look forward to.

Fresh meals as the way to go

Nobody wants to cook eloquent meals when it’s hot, we get it. But we still need to eat something to get that energy and keep going. It’s not good to just skip meals, because “it’s hot”, and you’re “not hungry”. That will not get you anywhere – you will soon find yourself feeling lethargic and deprived of energy. Therefore, the best way to go about that is to eat fresh, light meals that will fill you up but won’t make you feel all drowsy and heavy. Try opting for seasonal food, especially when it comes to fruit. Get those strawberries and pineapples, some orange juice and put it in the blender – you’ll get a nice, delicious smoothie. Avoid rich and heavy foods with excess fat in it – that’s not what you want for the summer. Instead, east smaller meals but more often, grab a healthy snack and a glass of water. Don’t underestimate the power of veggies and fruit, ‘cause frankly, that’s mostly likely what’s going to keep you energised and happy.

So, as you can see, staying healthy during summer is not all that difficult. It’s enough to introduce just a couple of changes to your daily routine and you’ll instantly feel the change. These little suggestions are made not only for you to stay healthy but also happy and content. We hope you’ll use them to your advantage.
